Understanding the Japanese Particle “に”: Usage with Time, Days, and Events

Ni in Japanese

Unlike English, Japanese particles are simple when it comes to expressing days and times. When it relates to time, days, or events, we simply use the particle に (ni) in Japanese, which can be translated as “on,” “at,” or “in” in English.

Event

On Christmasクリスマスにkurisumasu ni
On New Year’s Day年末年始(ねんまつねんし)にnenmatsunenshi ni
On Halloweenハロウィーンにharouīn ni
On my birthday誕生日(たんじょうび)にtanjōbi ni

Example sentences:

クリスマス、かぞくとばんごはんをたべました。 (kurisumasu ni, kazoku to bangohan o tabemashita)
English: On Christmas, I ate dinner with my family.

たんじょうび、プレゼントをもらいました。(tanjōbi ni, purezento o moraimashita)
English: On my birthday, I received a present.

Time

At 10 o’clock10時(じゅうじ)にju ji ni

Example sentences:

きょう7じおきました。(kyou shichi-ji ni okimashita)
English: I woke up at 7 o’clock today.
