Since everyone in the family got a mobile phone, the house phone rarely rings. Occasionally, there are calls about “great investment opportunities” or “introducing a marriage partner for my daughter,” and sometimes, unsettling calls about things like “preparing for a funeral.” These calls wouldn’t happen unless the caller knew our name and phone number. They must have obtained detailed information about our family, such as our ages, schools, workplaces, etc., through some method. There are also companies that buy and sell personal information, so they might be using that. Either way, it’s like having strangers peeking into our home, which makes me feel creepy.
By the way, how much of our personal information is actually known by others? Our assets, family records, beliefs, religion—could it be that even things like genetic information are being collected as data? Information that is supposed to be securely managed sometimes leaks, leading to situations where bank accounts are drained or credit cards are used without permission. When I think about my personal information being misused, it feels terrifying.
Nowadays, with the use of the internet, we live in an era where anyone can access a vast amount of information and easily exchange data with people they’ve never even met. As new technologies continue to be developed, more convenient services will become available, and there will be more opportunities to reference the information collected from them. However, as technology advances, there’s no doubt that more people will try to misuse it. When dealing with unseen entities, the only thing we can do is take personal responsibility and protect our own personal information.
